Adscessio

Adscessio was composed in memory of my grandfather who died of cancer recently. The composition highlights the darkness of grief. Adscessio is a Latin noun meaning emptiness. My piece captures the feeling of loss and mourning by laying a foundation of piano block chords with a solemn melody from the trombone. Dynamics are especially important at the beginning, where sustained notes set the tone for the piece. Over time, the sounds gradually wither away, bringing the main theme back at the end, and finally the trombone slowly decays to nothing.
